Siren Bait
Critter and his brothers showed Nani how to get to the top of the roof. While they did that, Finn had to calm Jigsaw down mentally, trying to convince it that he would be as safe as possible. How long had it been since they’d last been apart? Finn wondered, now that they had the ability to speak to one another, if Jigsaw had become more attached to him. However, as soon as he asked this question to himself, his Blade went quiet as if slightly embarrassed.
“They are ready for you,” said Critter, his voice holding more worry than Finn would have liked. “Are you ready?”
“Ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Have you ever done anything like this?”
“Been used as bait to a ten-foot woman with a fish head surrounded by her sisters that would want nothing more than devour my flesh?” Critter didn’t understand the joke but just stared with wide eyes, waiting for Finn’s reply. “No, Critter, I sure haven’t.”
They escorted Finn out of the blue lit building of jelly and moved quietly through the alleys, which were still devoid of mermen as, from what he could hear, they were still out in the very middle of the cavern going crazy. Had they all killed themselves by now?
“Here we are,” announced Critter, holding up a hand to stop Finn from walking into him. “Remember, as soon as you see the first arrow fly, that is your chance to kill the queen. If things go wrong, take her attention away, and your friend, the archer, should be able to deal with the situation accordingly.”
Finn grimaced slightly. “You sure used the word ‘should’ a lot just now.”
“Oh… did I? Well, don’t worry, Champion Featherstone. You should be just fine.”
“See! You did it again!”
Critter was just about to say something, when two mermen rounded the corner, each carrying spears that stood double their height.
“WE ARE HERE FOR THE PRISONER!”
“Here he is,” said Critter, with no emotion in his voice, which did not make Finn feel any better. “Just as we agreed.”
“THAT’S RIGHT!” shrieked one of the mermen, grabbing Finn roughly by the wrist and jerking him away from Critter. “YOU’RE COMING WITH US, HUMAN! PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE MOST PAINFUL DEATH YOU’VE EVER EXPERIENCED!”
“Not sure you can experience death but once,” argued Finn but then quickly remembered the many times he’d almost drowned.
“SHUT IT, FOOL!”
“YES! SHUT YOUR MOUTH! HOW DARE YOU KILL ONE OF OUR MOTHER LOVERS!”
“Mother lover?” repeated Finn. “What the heck is that?”
“SHE’S BOTH OUR MOTHER AND OUR—SHUT YOUR MOUTH! THIS WAY!”
They pulled Finn away from Critter, who snuck back into the darkness, already forgotten by the mermen, who were much more focused on their new capture.
“I doubt calling the one you want to mate with your mother is socially acceptable,” said Finn, not sure why he was feeling so funny today.
“NOT ANOTHER WORD!”
“YOU’RE COMING WITH US!”
“Yes, yes I am.”
“QUIET!”
“Okay.”
“SHUT IT!”
